Saudi Arabia Extends Work Permit Grace Period to 2026 End

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development has extended the grace period for rectifying expired work permits until the end of 2026, giving employers additional time to bring expatriate workers’ documentation into compliance.

The extension applies to workers whose permits have remained expired for more than 12 months. Furthermore, it covers employees who have not received work permits within six months of joining an establishment, closing a gap that previously left many workers in administrative limbo.

Compliance and Market Stability

According to the ministry, the move forms part of broader efforts to strengthen compliance with labour regulations while protecting the rights of both employers and employees.

Moreover, officials noted that the decision reflects positive responses from establishments and workers who have already taken steps to regularize their status, suggesting the extension rewards proactive compliance rather than simply delaying enforcement.

Consequently, the ministry urged employers to renew or issue work permits before the new deadline.

Importantly, it warned that authorities will enforce applicable legal measures against any establishment that fails to rectify workers’ status by year’s end.

Qiwa Platform Tightens Enforcement

Notably, the extension arrives just days after Saudi Arabia’s Qiwa platform announced that, starting on Wednesday, 1 July, it would automatically remove workers with expired permits from employers’ records once those permits had lapsed for more than three months.

Even so, employers remain financially liable for obligations incurred while employing workers without valid permits, regardless of whether their records have since been removed. Therefore, Qiwa has advised employers to settle outstanding fees promptly and complete necessary procedures, including renewing permits or transferring workers’ services, in order to avoid legal action and financial penalties.
