Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Energy, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman met on Monday with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy of Thailand, Supattanapong Punmeechaow, and his delegation, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The meeting is part of the Thai Minister’s official visit to Saudi Arabia to deepen the Saudi-Thai relations.
Bin Salman and Punmeechaow discussed various opportunities to boost the bilateral relations in several fields, including, oil, gas, renewable energy, hydrogen, carbon capture, utilization and storage, and energy efficiency.
Furthermore, both ministers highlighted the Kingdom’s efforts to lead the energy transformation by launching promising initiatives and projects such as “Saudi Green Initiative” and “Middle East Green Initiative”.
The Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) is an ambitious Saudi initiative launched by the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Saman in 2021to overcome climate change, promote the quality of life and protect the environment for the coming generations.
The SGI aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, crystalizing one of its fundamental objectives to reach net zero emissions by 2060 through the Circular Carbon Economy approach and the Saudi transformative path towards a sustainable green economy.
The Middle East Green Initiative (MGI) is a collaborative regional effort led by the Kingdom to mitigate the impacts of climate change on the entire region.
The MGI also aims at fostering economic diversification, creating several job opportunities, and attracting private sector investment.
The initiative set three objectives, as follows:
- Reducing carbon emissions by 670 mln tons of carbon dioxide
- Planting 50 bln trees across the region
- Restoring 200 mln hectares of degraded land
