Trump Ties Peace to New Proposal as Iran Says Hormuz Safe Transit ‘Possible’
US President Donald Trump said that the war with Iran could end if Tehran agrees to Washington’s peace proposal.
“Assuming Iran agrees to give what has been agreed to, which is, perhaps, a big assumption, the already legendary Epic Fury will be at an end, and the highly effective Blockade will allow the Hormuz Strait to be OPEN TO ALL, including Iran,” Trump posted on Truth Social on Wednesday.
However, Trump warned that heavy strikes could resume if Iran does not agree to the new proposal. “If they don’t agree, the bombing starts, and it will be, sadly, at a much higher level and intensity than it was before,” he said.
Trump’s remarks came shortly after he paused “Project Freedom” – a US initiative to guide commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz – due to “great progress” towards reaching a “complete and final agreement” with Iran.
In response, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Navy said that safe passage through the critical waterway is possible under new procedures, according to Iranian media.
“With the aggressor’s threats neutralized and new protocols in place, safe [and] stable passage through [the Strait] will be ensured,” IRGC Navy announced, without elaborating what the new procedures entail.
The US and Iran are inching closer towards a 14-point, one-page memorandum of understanding (MoU) to end the war and pave the way for nuclear negotiations, Axios and Reuters reported citing officials and sources briefed on the issue.
If agreed, the MoU would end the war and start a 30-day period of detailed negotiations to reach a full agreement.
The full agreement includes lifting US sanctions and releasing frozen Iranian funds, lifting competing blockades on the Strait of Hormuz, and curbs on Iran’s nuclear program, with the aim of seeking a pause or moratorium on Iranian enrichment of uranium.
