Top Saudi and Iranian Diplomats Hold Talks on De-escalation Efforts

Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Faisal bin Farhan spoke by phone with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Wednesday to discuss the volatile regional situation. The Saudi Foreign Ministry confirmed the call in an official statement, noting that the two ministers “discussed the latest regional developments and efforts made to maintain the security and stability of the region.”

The call reflects the Kingdom’s sustained commitment to resolving regional tensions through dialogue rather than confrontation. Saudi Arabia has consistently advocated for diplomacy as the preferred path forward, and it has extended clear public support to Pakistan in its mediating role between Washington and Tehran.

Pakistan Credits Saudi Arabia in Hormuz Pause

That mediation effort produced a notable result this week, as Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated on Wednesday that US President Donald Trump agreed to pause “Project Freedom” in the Strait of Hormuz following a direct request from Pakistan and other countries , with Saudi Arabia specifically among them.

The context for these diplomatic efforts is significant. Israel and the United States began launching strikes on Iran on 28 February. Iran responded with attacks on Israeli and American targets across the region, strikes on civilian infrastructure in neighbouring countries, and a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. A ceasefire consequently took effect on 8 April, however, the situation remains highly unstable.

Regional and international observers therefore continue to watch Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic engagements closely, as the Kingdom positions itself as a key stabilising force in an increasingly tense Gulf environment.
