Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz reached a critical flashpoint on Tuesday as Iran warned Washington against further military escalation, following a series of violent exchanges that threaten the stability of global energy markets and a fragile regional ceasefire.
The US military confirmed that its Apache and Seahawk helicopters engaged six Iranian vessels on Monday, as the boats reportedly threatened commercial shipping lanes. While US forces repelled several missiles and drones, the UAE reported fresh Iranian strikes on its sovereign territory.
Escalation in the Waterway
Iran’s Parliament Speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, issued a stern message on social media regarding the presence of American forces.
“We know full well that the continuation of the status quo is intolerable for America; whilst we have not even started yet,” Ghalibaf stated. He further claimed that the “malign presence” of Western allies would eventually diminish, asserting that Tehran would never surrender control of the strategic chokepoint.
Tehran denied losing any combat ships during the US strikes, with Iranian officials accusing Washington of killing five civilian passengers. Despite these hostilities, Danish shipping giant Maersk confirmed that one of its vessels successfully transited the strait under US escort.
Global Economic Fallout
The renewed conflict has sent shockwaves through the global economy, as crude prices surged following the attacks, causing stock markets to dip as investors feared for the future of the energy trade.
European leaders expressed deep concern over the blockade, as EU chief Ursula von der Leyen described the attacks as “unacceptable,” noting that regional insecurity directly impacts Europe. Similarly, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Tehran to return to the negotiating table and stop holding the world hostage.
The UAE reported that it intercepted three of four cruise missiles launched during the latest barrage. Additionally, Iran targeted a tanker affiliated with ADNOC, with an Iranian military official blaming the violence on “US military adventurism,” claiming Washington must remain accountable for attempting to break the maritime blockade.
