Pakistan PM, Iran Envoy Discuss Regional Situation after US Ceasefire Extension

The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, met on Wednesday with the Iranian Ambassador to Islamabad, Reza Amiri Moghadam, hours after the US decided to unilaterally extend the ceasefire.

During their meeting, they discussed the ongoing regional situation and efforts aimed at promoting peace and stability, the Pakistani Prime Minister’s office said in a statement on X.

Pakistan has emerged as the primary mediator in the peace talks between the US and Iran. On April 11, 2026, Islamabad hosted the first direct talks in decades between Washington and Tehran, following an extensive diplomatic push to secure an agreement that brings a permanent end to the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

As the talks ended with no breakthrough, Pakistan was set to host a second round of talks on Tuesday, hours before a fragile two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran was due to expire.

However, the second round failed to take place as Tehran rejected participation as long as the American blockade on Iranian ports persists and US Vice President JD Vance did not leave Washington as planned.

Late Tuesday, US President Donald Trump announced he had agreed to extend the ceasefire indefinitely to allow Iran to prepare a unified proposal, upon a request from Pakistan’s Prime Minister Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir.

“We have been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal,” he posted on Truth Social.

Despite the extension, Trump emphasized that the naval blockade will remain in effect until reaching a deal with Iran.
