Spain Calls for EU to Suspend Association Agreement with Israel

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Sunday that Spain will formally urge the European Union to suspend its association agreement with Israel over alleged violations of international law, according to AFP.

Sánchez has been an outspoken critic of Israel’s genocide in Gaza that continued for two years.

In October 2023, Spain decided to stop selling any weapons to the Israeli occupation because of its bloody war in Gaza.

Moreover, the government pledged to stop purchasing any ammunition from Israel in 2024 due to its genocide in Gaza.

Spain has also criticized the government of Benjamin Netanyahu over the war in Gaza and Israel’s military strikes on neighboring Lebanon.

In response, Netanyahu has accused Spain of “hypocrisy and hostility,” highlighting deepening diplomatic tensions between the two sides.

“On Tuesday, Spain’s government will present a proposal to the EU that the European Union break off its association agreement with Israel,” Sanchez told a political rally in Andalusia.

He also noted that Israel “violates international law” and therefore “cannot be a partner of the European Union … it’s as simple as that.”

On Friday, Ireland and Slovenia have jointly submitted a letter to the European Commission, urging that the EU’s association agreement with Israel be placed on the agenda of the upcoming meeting of EU foreign ministers.

This month, Netanyahu accused Spain of conducting a hostile diplomatic campaign against Israel. He also moved to bar Madrid from participating in a US-led center established to support stabilization efforts in post-war Gaza.

“Israel will not remain silent in the face of those who attack us,” Netanyahu added.
