An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale shook a densely populated area of New York City on Friday morning; also buildings trembled throughout Manhattan, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
“The earthquake shook the densely populated New York City metropolitan area Friday morning,” the U.S. Geological Survey said. “Residents across the Northeast reported rumbling in a region where people are unaccustomed to feeling the ground move.”
The Geological Survey added that the quake occurred at 10:23 a.m. with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8, centered near Lebanon, New Jersey, or about 45 miles west of New York City and 50 miles north of Philadelphia. USGS figures indicated that the quake might have been felt by more than 42 million people.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said: “A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit west of Manhattan and has been felt throughout New York. My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day.”
The White House said in a statement that President Joe Biden had been briefed on the earthquake and was “in touch with federal, state, and local officials.
Some airports in the New York area were briefly put in a ground stop for both incoming and outgoing traffic for inspections following the earthquake. The FAA said air travel operations would resume “as quickly as possible.”
Social media users reported feeling the earthquake from Philadelphia up to New York and eastward along Long Island. There were no initial reports of injuries or damage after New York City was shaken by a small earthquake on Friday.
