Saudi Arabia Tops Global ICT Rankings as Digital Sustainability Takes Center Stage
The Kingdom ranked first globally in the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) ICT Development Index (IDI), marking one of the key national achievements highlighted in the fifth edition of the 2026 Sustainability Report for the Communications, Space and Technology Sector.
Riyadh Leads the Digital Regulation Conversation
This edition of the report, issued by the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) in partnership with the ITU and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, reflects the Kingdom’s vision under the theme “A Sustainable Present for an Empowered Future.”
The event culminated in the “Riyadh Outcomes for Innovative Regulation,” underscoring the Kingdom’s pivotal role in defining regulatory approaches for a more sustainable digital era.
Can Digital Growth Become More Environmentally Responsible?
With the rapid expansion of digital technologies, Saudi Arabia is placing special emphasis on making that growth environmentally responsible. As a living testament, the launch of a global guide for developing e-waste policies and regulations seeks to elevate how electronic waste is managed while helping accelerate the transition toward a circular economy.
More broadly, the Kingdom is also taking a more active role in shaping sustainable digital standards through its membership on the board of the Digital Regulation Network. Meanwhile, the launch of an Earth observation platform and the “Shams” satellite reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to monitoring space weather and supporting long-term space sustainability.
Turning Innovation into Sustainable Impact
Sustainability is emerging as a collective effort across Saudi Arabia’s communications, space, and technology sectors. The report shines a spotlight on a series of initiatives led by the CST and its partners in areas ranging from the digital circular economy and space sustainability to regulatory capacity building and international cooperation, underscoring the breadth of the Kingdom’s scope.
Enhancing this momentum, the report featured 14 national success stories. Bringing together more than 25 public- and private-sector entities, the stories demonstrate how innovation and collaboration are generating environmental, economic, and social value across the Kingdom.
These success stories offer glimpses into how advanced technologies are moving from innovation to real-world impact. Today, artificial intelligence, space technologies, and satellite-based Earth observation are being widely deployed to address environmental and development challenges, while creating lasting value for both society and the economy.
Looking ahead, the report sets out a vision for an even more sustainable digital and space ecosystem. Its future directions align with the Sustainable Development Goals, making technology and innovation key drivers of long-term, inclusive progress.
