From Bookseller to Data Harvester: Amazon’s Rare-Book Push for AI

In a striking irony, Amazon—once a pure-play bookseller—is now buying up large quantities of rare books, stripping their covers, rebinding them and scanning their pages to feed artificial intelligence training datasets, according to an investigation by 404 Media.

Reporters placed a tracking device inside one of the rare books sold online and followed it to an Amazon facility in Las Vegas, USA, designated VGT3.

The site identifies itself with a logo depicting a dinosaur clutching a book in its claws.

In a statement to 404 Media, Amazon said it “buys books through commercial channels to improve the products and services that customers use.”

Why Rare Books Matter for AI

Developers of large language models (LLMs) require enormous volumes of text to train their systems, after already exhausting much of the content readily available online.

Rare books—particularly out-of-print titles or those without digital editions—have become an attractive new source of training data because they offer texts that are not easily found on the internet.

These volumes are increasingly valuable to AI companies because they largely contain original human-written material, rather than content generated by other AI systems.

Risk of Model Collapse

The push connects to a growing concern known as “model collapse,” a phenomenon that can arise when AI models are trained too heavily on content produced by other models, potentially causing a gradual decline in output quality.

Consequently, older and rarer human-authored texts have gained importance for AI developers, even if acquiring them means purchasing physical books and then destroying them to extract their digital content.

The practice underscores a stark paradox: the company that built its early business on selling books is now treating rare volumes as raw material for the AI era, even when the result is the destruction of the originals.
