Saudi Arabia is steadily proving that the path to realizing the Sustainable Development Goals should begin at the local level where global aspirations are turned into tangible policies that define the dynamics of the everyday lives of communities.
Localizing the SDGs Through Data
With this approach in focus, the Madinah Region Development Authority stepped onto the international stage at the 2026 High‑Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, held at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
There, the authority seized the opportunity to highlight its distinctive experience in localizing the SDGs, underscoring Madinah’s growing role as a prestigious hub for data‑driven approaches to sustainable urban development.
During a session titled “Transformation from the Ground Up: Acting at the Local Level,” the authority placed the spotlight on its leading use of data to shape the city’s future. By showcasing the role of advanced practices in harnessing analytics and guide urban planning, the authority demonstrated how evidence‑based decision‑making is not only accelerating development but also promoting the quality of life for residents across Madinah.
The Power of Neighborhood Data
Engineer Abdulrahman Ibrahim, Executive Director of Data and Innovation, shined a spotlight on the authority’s modern approach to urban analytics, addressing its role in redefining how cities measure progress. He clarified that Madinah’s approach is moving beyond broad, macro‑level indicators to embrace detailed, neighborhood‑scale spatial data, to capture the realities of urban development with deeper insights.
This remarkable shift is not just refining data. Rather, it is revealing hidden development gaps, empowering evidence‑based decision‑making, and supporting the global principle of “leaving no one behind.”
The forum provided the Madinah Region Development Authority with an amazing opportunity to illustrate the city’s pioneering journey in developing an integrated system for urban data analysis.
Building a Global Alliance
Apart from this, the authority unveiled a bold vision for global collaboration with the proposal of an “Alliance of Actors.” Developed in partnership with national and international stakeholders, the initiative hinges on three core pillars regulatory, governance, and technical. Together, they form a framework designed to enhance cooperation and accelerate the localization of sustainable development worldwide.
The proposed initiative encompasses an ambitious blueprint for collaboration, seeking to strike a delicate balance between regulations and policies while developing robust governance frameworks that can lead cities toward sustainable growth.
