1st Phase of Unifying USB Type-C Charging Ports Begins in Saudi Arabia
The Communications, Space, and Technology Commission, along with the Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Organization, announced the commencement of the first mandatory phase to unify charging ports for mobile phones and electronic devices in the Saudi market. Starting from today, January 1, 2025, all devices must use the “USB Type-C” standard.
The two authorities clarified that the decision to standardize charging port types aims to enhance user experience in the Kingdom, avoid imposing additional costs on consumers, provide high-quality charging and data transfer technology. They also improve the quality of tech products, support environmental sustainability principles, and contribute to achieving sustainable development goals by reducing the volume of electronic waste.
The authorities also revealed that the first mandatory phase includes mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, e-readers, portable video game consoles, headphones, earphones, audio speakers, keyboards, computer mice, portable navigation systems, portable speakers, and wireless routers. Moreover, the second phase will begin on April 1, 2026, and will include portable computers.

It is worth noting that the Communications, Space, and Technology Commission, along with the Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Organization, announced on 06/08/2023 the mandatory phases for unifying charging ports for mobile phones and electronic devices in the Saudi market. Furthermore, companies and suppliers are required to standardize charging port types to be of the “USB Type-C” type, in accordance with the technical and administrative requirements stipulated in the relevant technical regulations and standards.
