US Energy Secretary Chris Wright sharpened his warning on Thursday, unveiling that Washington may exit the International Energy Agency unless the body abandons its net‑zero agenda, according to AFP.
Wright also threatened that the United States would press the organization to reverse this energy policy “within the next year or so.”
“The US will use all the pressure we have to get the IEA to eventually, in the next year or so, move away from this agenda,” Wright said in a news conference.
He urged the 52‑year‑old body to abandon its net‑zero agenda and return back to its founding mission of safeguarding energy security during his participation at an IEA ministerial meeting in Paris.
Established after the 1973 oil crisis, the International Energy Agency basically coordinates responses to supply shocks.
Currently, the agency is facing sharp criticism from Washington after embracing a climate agenda focused on achieving net‑zero emissions by 2050.
“But if the IEA is not able to bring itself back to focusing on the mission of energy honesty, energy access and energy security, then sadly we would become an ex-member of the IEA,” Wright added.
