Vision 2030: Saudi Arabia Unveils 4.5 GW Renewable Energy Projects

Saudi Arabia has taken another bold step toward its Vision 2030 goals by launching a new wave of renewable energy projects. The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) has issued a request for qualifications for the sixth round of solar and wind projects, adding 4,500 megawatts of energy to the national grid.

Major Projects in Key Regions

The upcoming projects include the 1,500-MW Dawadmi wind project in Riyadh, the 1,400-MW Najran solar project, and two solar initiatives in Jazan — Samtah and Al-Darb — each with a capacity of 600 MW. Additionally, the Sufun solar project in Hail will contribute 400 MW to the energy mix.

These projects are part of the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP), overseen by the Ministry of Energy. They align with the King Salman Renewable Energy Initiative, a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia’s ambitious Vision 2030 plan.

Driving Toward Sustainability

The NREP is designed to diversify the Kingdom’s energy sources and stimulate economic development. By 2030, Saudi Arabia aims for renewable energy to account for nearly 50% of its electricity generation. So far, the SPPC has awarded over 19 gigawatts of renewable energy projects, reflecting the country’s commitment to sustainable energy.

Key Partnerships and Investments

Earlier this year, SPPC finalized power purchase agreements valued at SR12.3 billion ($3.3 billion) for solar projects in collaboration with ACWA Power, Badeel, and Aramco Power. These projects, including Haden and Al-Muwaih in Makkah and Al-Khushaybi in Qassim, will significantly boost the Kingdom’s renewable capacity.

In June 2024, the Ministry of Energy announced a series of annual tenders, targeting a renewable energy capacity of 100 to 130 GW by 2030. The SPPC continues to play a pivotal role in predevelopment, tendering, and energy procurement processes.

Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy initiatives demonstrate its long-term strategy to reduce carbon emissions and secure a sustainable future for generations to come. The latest projects further strengthen its position as a global leader in renewable energy development.
