US Envoy Witkoff in Moscow as Sanctions Deadline Looms

US envoy Steve Witkoff touched down in Moscow Wednesday, state media confirmed, launching urgent talks with Russian leaders ahead of President Trump’s critical sanctions deadline. Consequently, Witkoff aims to secure concessions before Friday’s cutoff for new economic penalties over Ukraine.

President Trump demands Russia halt its Ukraine offensive by Friday or face severe economic penalties targeting its key trade partners globally. Furthermore, the White House has not detailed specific Friday actions yet clearly threatens “secondary tariffs” against nations like China and India. This aggressive move seeks to cripple Russian exports but risks major international economic disruption immediately.

Trump explicitly stated Tuesday he will await Moscow talks’ outcome before imposing any economic retaliation whatsoever. “We’re going to see what happens,” Trump told reporters plainly. “We’ll make that determination at that time,” he emphasized clearly.

Diplomatic Push Amid Stalled Peace Efforts

Upon arrival, Witkoff met presidential special representative Kirill Dmitriev according to Russian state news agency TASS reports exclusively. However, an American source declined to confirm if Witkoff will meet President Vladimir Putin despite their prior discussions. Meanwhile, Russia continues its military campaign against Ukraine despite intense Western pressure relentlessly.

Three Istanbul peace talks failed completely to bridge the widening gap between Kyiv and Moscow on a ceasefire agreement. Specifically, Moscow demands Ukraine cede more territory and abandon Western alliances entirely. Conversely, Kyiv insists on an immediate ceasefire while President Zelenskyy recently urged allies to pursue “regime change” in Moscow directly.

Trump’s Frustration and Nuclear Tensions

Trump voiced growing frustration with Putin recently over Russia’s unrelenting offensive actions in Ukraine. When pressed Monday about Witkoff’s message, Trump replied bluntly: “Yeah, get a deal where people stop getting killed.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the Witkoff talks “important, substantial and helpful” while valuing US conflict resolution efforts sincerely.

Putin reiterated Friday his desire for peace but insisted his core demands for ending the nearly three-and-a-half-year war remain unchanged. Specifically, Russia insists Ukraine formally cede four annexed regions and renounce NATO membership ambitions completely. Kyiv consistently rejects these terms as utterly unacceptable sovereignty violations.

This high-stakes visit follows Trump’s announcement deploying two nuclear submarines to “the region” after an online dispute with former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev. Trump did not clarify if these are nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed vessels nor reveal exact secret deployment locations. Russia urged “caution” regarding this deployment immediately on Monday through Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. “Russia is very attentive to nuclear non-proliferation,” Peskov stated firmly. “Everyone should be very, very cautious with nuclear rhetoric,” he concluded pointedly.
