US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he granted approval for South Korea to develop a nuclear-powered submarine, following the news that the allies finalized a broad new trade agreement. Both leaders met on Wednesday in Gyeongju, where Trump was attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum summit.
US Shipyards to Build New Fleet
Consequently, Trump clarified his decision on Truth Social, stating the new vessel would replace South Korea’s less-nimble, old-fashioned diesel submarines. Furthermore, the President announced South Korea will construct its nuclear-powered submarine in the Philadelphia Shipyards, signaling a powerful comeback for American shipbuilding efforts.
The South Korean government had previously requested approval for nuclear fuel, emphasizing they sought only a conventional vessel for enhanced tracking capabilities. President Lee specifically explained that inferior endurance of their current diesel submarines limited Seoul’s ability to consistently track North Korean or Chinese submarines.
Geopolitical Tensions Remain
However, the approval and a “PEACE!” themed luncheon dessert contrast sharply with the continuing high tensions with nuclear-armed North Korea. Additionally, Pyongyang recently dismissed President Lee’s diplomatic outreach, choosing instead to deepen their military and economic ties with Russian forces.
Finally, Trump confirmed he could not arrange a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his visit, effectively ending fierce speculation about a possible future summit.
