Universal Studios is currently exploring early-stage plans to launch a major theme park within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, according to a Wall Street Journal report. This move could set up direct competition between the Comcast-owned unit and Disney in the rapidly expanding Middle East entertainment market.
Last month, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts visited the Qiddiya entertainment megaproject to survey potential sites for this multibillion-dollar development. Universal is conducting initial concept work for a park that would likely utilize a lucrative licensing model for its operations, people with knowledge of the matter told the WSJ. Consequently, a Saudi government-backed entity would provide the necessary financing, ensuring the Kingdom maintains its rapid pace of economic diversification.
Consequently, the project would join other international brands, like the recently announced Disney park in Abu Dhabi, in betting on the Middle East’s future.
Strengthening Global Tourism
The proposed park aims for completion in the 2030s, aligning perfectly with the ambitious goals of the Saudi Vision 2030. While Universal has not finalized the deal, the project represents a significant shift as Gulf nations invest heavily in marquee attractions. Unlike previous attempts in the region, this partnership focuses on sustainable growth and reaching a massive, untapped audience in the Middle East.
Qiddiya already hosts a variety of high-profile projects, including a Six Flags park and a dedicated Dragon Ball Z destination. Furthermore, the city features a massive water park currently under construction just a short drive from the capital, Riyadh. Universal may bring iconic franchises like Jurassic Park or Nintendo to the Kingdom, though officials have not confirmed specific licenses yet.
However, developers are designing these new attractions to handle the local climate through advanced indoor facilities and extended evening operating hours. Therefore, these parks will provide year-round entertainment for both domestic families and international tourists seeking world-class thrills in the desert.
