British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will embark on a significant visit to Saudi Arabia on Monday. This trip aims to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations. The visit is part of a broader Gulf tour, signaling the UK’s commitment to the region.
Starmer’s visit will include discussions with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to advance a potential free trade agreement with the GCC. The agenda emphasizes boosting trade, enhancing defense partnerships, and encouraging Saudi investments in the UK.
Trade between the UK and Saudi Arabia totals £17 billion annually, with Saudi Arabia being the UK’s largest defense exports market, valued at £3.8 billion. A new Gulf trade agreement could boost UK trade by 16%, adding an estimated £8.6 billion annually.
Driving Innovation and Collaboration
“This region holds immense untapped potential,” Starmer stated, emphasizing plans to accelerate the Gulf Cooperation Council Free Trade Agreement. He aims to deepen research and development collaboration in artificial intelligence, defense, and future-focused projects.
Saudi Arabia and the UAE are already significant investors in the UK, and Starmer plans to strengthen ties, particularly in innovation and technology.
Addressing Regional Stability
In addition to trade, Starmer will discuss Middle East stability, calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza. He also seeks the release of hostages and the acceleration of humanitarian aid.
Starmer’s visit highlights Saudi Arabia’s central role in UK foreign policy and its influence on Gulf economic and security strategies. This underscores the Kingdom’s position as a pivotal partner in shaping the region’s future.
