The Trump administration on Friday extended work permits for hundreds of thousands of migrants covered by Temporary Protected Status (TPS), hours before the documents were set to expire.
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), part of the Department of Homeland Security, said work permits for Haitian TPS beneficiaries will remain valid until July 24. Permits for TPS holders from Ethiopia, Syria, Somalia, Yemen, South Sudan and Myanmar are also set to remain valid through expiration dates over the coming week.

The move follows a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last month allowing the administration to end Temporary Protected Status for nationals of Haiti and Syria.
Temporary Protected Status allows eligible nationals of countries affected by armed conflict, natural disasters or other extraordinary conditions to remain in the United States and work legally for a limited period.
The Supreme Court’s decision raised concerns among immigrant advocates and community groups, who warned that hundreds of thousands of people could lose both work authorization and protection from deportation.
Labor unions also urged the administration to extend the permits, warning that allowing them to expire could disrupt workplaces and affect industries that rely on TPS holders.

Since returning to office, President Donald Trump has pursued a tougher immigration agenda aimed at reducing migration and increasing deportations. Human rights groups have criticized the policies, arguing that they undermine due process and free expression while creating a climate of fear among immigrant communities and raising concerns about racial discrimination.
Although Trump campaigned in the 2024 election on curbing illegal immigration, his administration has also tightened some legal immigration pathways. It has introduced higher fees for certain visa applications and expanded scrutiny of the social media activity of visa applicants and immigrants already living in the United States.
The administration says the measures are intended to strengthen national security and protect employment opportunities for American workers.
