Transport Authority Boosts Saudi Arabia’s Global Logistics, Innovation Hub Status

Major Accomplishments at Year's End

In 2023, the General Transport Authority of Saudi Arabia significantly bolstered its position by recording leaps in the development of land, sea, and rail transport sectors.

This enhancement cemented its transport and logistics leadership with advanced digital transformation, innovative platforms, and integrated services. The Authority also notably boosted the Kingdom’s global standing at international forums, achieving major milestones in sustainable and innovative transportation.

Major Accomplishments at Year’s End

One of the major achievements at the year’s end was the Authority’s reinforcement of Saudi Arabia’s maritime leadership internationally. This was highlighted by its re-election to the membership of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for 2024-2025. This victory reflects the Kingdom’s prestigious position and effective influence within the organization, highlighting the prominence of the Saudi maritime fleet.

The victory is also an acknowledgment of the Kingdom’s ambitious initiatives and projects in line with its transport and logistics strategy, according to SABQ Online Newspaper.

Enhancing Safe and Efficient Mobility

In a promising step to enhance safe and efficient mobility, the Authority activated 9 public transport projects aimed at serving residents, tourists, and visitors. It also launched the largest intercity bus transport project in the Kingdom, connecting 200 cities and provinces and providing intercity passenger bus services. This project includes 3 international alliances covering 3 different concession areas.

Improving Public Transport Services

The Authority contributed to enhancing the efficiency of public transport services. Its efforts were crowned with success when the Council of Ministers approved the regulations for the rights and obligations of public transport users.

This step reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to improving service efficiency in the public transport sector.  The regulations actively contribute to enhancing the public transport experience and improving its quality for users.

Pioneering in Future Transport

In advancing transport’s future, the Authority introduced the Kingdom’s first hydrogen and electric trucks, showcasing its industry leadership. It also debuted zero-emission electric buses in Jeddah, Medina, and Dammam-Qatif, emphasizing its commitment to environmental improvement and sustainability.

Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation

Continuing its commitment to sustainability and innovation, the Authority launched the first hydrogen train in the Middle East and North Africa, along with autonomous driving buses, and initiated the rental of electric cars. These efforts enhance the Authority’s endeavors to provide advanced and environmentally-friendly transport services.

Innovations in Transport

The Authority didn’t stop at that, as it used virtual reality glasses for the first time in supervisory operations and deployed drones to measure bus traffic, indicating a move towards advanced technology in managing and improving transport services.

Supporting Innovation

To support innovation, the Authority launched a regulatory environment program for transport sector innovation and sustainability. This step contributes to achieving the goals of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy.

Empowering Women in Transport

The Authority held events in Riyadh and Jeddah, including a transport sector women’s forum on International Women’s Day. This highlighted women’s essential role, featuring top national talents and inspiring stories. Furthermore, an agreement was also signed with the National Observatory for Women.

Subsequently, in the realm of Maritime Industry Sustainability, the Authority organized an “Innovation for a Green Future” conference, focusing on sustainable maritime industry. This conference brought together maritime experts and leaders to discuss future solutions and develop the maritime sector.

Additionally, the Authority conducted efficiency tests for “Master Mariner” and “Chief Marine Engineer” roles. This underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to developing local maritime professionals. It also celebrated the graduation of the first female maritime transport instructor.

Organising major event for sustainable transport

Consequently, the Authority organized this major event, attracting top talents nationwide to innovate in sustainable transport. They focused on six key areas: logistics, public transport, and transport in health, education, tourism, as well as Hajj and Umrah. Winners received prizes totaling 300,000 Saudi Riyals.
