A high-ranking Syrian delegation led by Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani arrived in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday night, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
The delegation, which also includes Defense Minister Marahf Abu Qasra and Intelligence Chief Anas Khattab, was welcomed at Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport by Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed Elkhereiji.
Al-Shibani had announced on X earlier this week that he accepted an invitation from Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan to visit the Kingdom. This marks Al-Shibani’s first international trip since the removal of former Syrian president Bashar Assad on December 8.
The visit follows remarks by Syria’s new leader, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, who emphasized Saudi Arabia’s significant role in Syria’s future during an interview with Al Arabiya on Sunday.
“Saudi Arabia has a crucial role in shaping Syria’s future, and I deeply appreciate everything it has done for us,” Al-Sharaa stated, noting that he spent part of his childhood in Riyadh and expressed a desire to revisit the city.
Al-Sharaa also lauded Saudi Arabia’s recent diplomatic statements as “very positive” and highlighted Riyadh’s efforts to promote stability in Syria.
