Stressing Support: Saudi Arabia Leads Drive to Lift Syria’s Sanctions

Saudi Arabia emphasized its support for Syria’s security, stability and unity, during talks held in Damascus.

In the first official visit since the collapse of Bashar Assad’s regime, the Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, met with top officials in the new Syrian administration, highlighting the Kingdom’s efforts to lift all sanctions imposed on Syria.

On Friday, January 24, 2025, the Saudi Foreign Minister arrived in the Syrian capital, Damascus. He was warmly received by the leader of Syria’s new administration, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, at the Presidential Palace (Qasr Al-Shaab).

During the reception, Prince Faisal bin Farhan conveyed the greetings of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Salman, to Al-Sharaa and the Syrian people.

Similarly, Al-Sharaa extended his greetings to the leadership of Saudi Arabia, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Saudi-Syrian Discussions

The Saudi Foreign Minister and Syria’s new administration leader explored ways to support Syria’s security, stability and territorial integrity. Furthermore, both officials discussed efforts to strengthen political, humanitarian, and economic aspects in Syria.

Moreover, the discussions focused on efforts to lift sanctions imposed on the country and providing all forms of support for Syria at this critical stage to restore stability and revitalize its national institutions, in a manner that aligns with the aspirations of the Syrian people.

Lifting Syria’s Sanctions

The Saudi Foreign Minister underscored the urgent need for lifting all sanctions on Syria, reported Asharq Al-Awsat.

During a press conference alongside the Syrian Foreign Minister, Asaad Al-Shaibani, Prince Faisal pointed to the importance of accelerating the process of lifting sanctions.

“We will continue to work with our brothers in Syria until we reach a final lifting of the sanctions imposed on their country,” he said.

The Saudi top diplomat added that the Kingdom is engaged in “active dialogue with all relevant countries, whether the US or the European Union (EU),” to advance sanctions relief. He said that Saudi Arabia is “hearing positive messages.”

On his part, the Syrian Foreign Minister said that the lifting of sanctions would allow for “the opening of new channels for investment and trade,” in addition to rebuilding infrastructure and creating jobs.

Supporting Syria’s Transition

Prince Faisal commended the new Syrian administration for its openness to engaging in dialogue with all parties, expressing his confidence in the Syrian people’s ability to navigate this critical period and achieve a prosperous and stable future.

Earlier in January, Riyadh hosted high-level meetings on Syria, bringing together top Arab and Western diplomats to discuss the future of Syria and explore ways to support the Syrian people.

During the Riyadh Meetings, participants expressed their support for a political transition process that includes all Syrian political and social groups and protects the rights of all Syrians.

They also pointed to the need for addressing any challenges or concerns through dialogue. The participants reiterated their support for the choices and will of the Syrian people.

Praising Saudi Arabia’s Support

During his visit to Damascus, the Saudi Foreign Minister met with his Syrian counterpart. In the light of this, Al-Shaibani recognized Saudi Arabia’s continuous support for Syria and its people, saying that Prince Faisal’s visit “demonstrates this support.”

He also noted that consultations with the Kingdom are proceeding with ease on all levels, with “no reservations or obstacles.” Moreover, Al-Shaibani highlighted the significance of cooperation with Saudi Arabia. He said: “Our cooperation will be an important step towards building a better future for the region.”

Since the start of 2025, Saudi Arabia has stepped up its humanitarian aid to Syria. The Kingdom was also the destination of Al-Shaibani’s first foreign visit, as he led a high-ranking delegation representing the new Syrian administration in a visit to Riyadh.

Furthermore, Al-Sharaa praised Saudi Arabia’s support and pivotal role in shaping the future of Syria in an interview with Al-Arabiya TV. “Saudi Arabia has a crucial role in shaping Syria’s future, and I deeply appreciate everything it has done for us,” he said.
