Saudi-UK Roundtable on AI, Discusses Ethics, Regulatory Intricacies

In the fast-evolving realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI), nations are coming together to deliberate on the ethical and regulatory dimensions of this disruptive technology. The inaugural Saudi-UK roundtable on AI, which took place at the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority headquarters in Riyadh is a beacon of the collaborative spirit necessary to navigate the ethical and regulatory intricacies of AI. As Saudi Arabia and the UK continue to foster their partnership, the global AI community inches closer to a future where AI not only propels innovation but also upholds the highest standards of ethics and integrity.

The Roundtable Overview

The first of its kind, the Saudi Arabia-UK roundtable on AI witnessed a confluence of thought leaders, policy-makers, and academicians from both nations. The event was orchestrated by notable entities including the British Embassy and the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). Among the attendees were Yaser Al-Onaizan, the deputy CEO and deputy general-supervisor of the National Center for Artificial Intelligence, and Neil Crompton, the UK Ambassador to the Kingdom, alongside other senior officials and private sector representatives.

Focal Points of Discussion

The deliberations at the roundtable gravitated towards key ethical and regulatory concerns pertaining to AI. Privacy, public trust, and transparency emerged as the central themes of the discourse, underscoring the imperative of fostering a culture of accountability in AI deployments. Moreover, the event served as a platform to showcase research initiatives from KAUST and highlighted the potential domains of AI cooperation between Saudi Arabia and the UK.

Fostering Global Partnerships

An integral part of the roundtable’s agenda was to fortify the Saudi-UK alliance in AI. A testament to this objective was the announcement of a Saudi delegation’s participation in the forthcoming global AI safety summit in Britain, slated for November 1 to 2. This summit, endorsed by Britain’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, aims to address the existential threats potentially posed by AI, thereby resonating with the regulatory ethos echoed in the Saudi-UK roundtable.

Saudi’s Strides in AI Ethics

Parallel to the roundtable, Saudi Arabia has been proactive in sculpting its AI ethics framework. The Saudi Data & Artificial Intelligence Authority recently unveiled the AI Ethics Principles version 2.0, a document aimed at guiding entities in developing responsible AI solutions. This initiative underscores Saudi’s commitment to mitigating the negative ramifications of AI while promoting innovation.
