Saudi Leadership Congratulates Al-Sharaa on Appointment as Syria’s Transitional President
Saudi Arabia’s leadership has extended its congratulations to Syria’s Ahmed Al-Sharaa for being named president for the transitional period, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
Extending Congratulations
On Thursday, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, sent a cable of congratulations to Al-Sharaa on the occasion of his appointment as Syria’s transitional president.
Furthermore, King Salman wished Al-Sharaa success in leading Syria toward a prosperous future that meets the aspirations of its people. The King also wished Syria more progress and prosperity.
Similarly, the Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Salman, sent a cable, extending his congratulations to Al-Sharaa for assuming the presidency of Syria during the transitional period.
The Crown Prince wished Al-Sharaa success at this stage, during which the Syrian people look forward to realizing their aspirations. He also wished the Syrian people progress and development.
Transitional President
On Wednesday, the official Syrian news agency (SANA) reported that the new Syrian administration announced the appointment of Al-Sharaa as interim president to lead the transitional period, after the fall of Bashar Assad’s regime in early December 2024.
Moreover, the announcement included the suspension of the 2012 constitution and the dissolution of the People’s Assembly, army and security agencies.
Thus, Al-Sharaa has assumed the task of forming an interim legislative council to oversee the transition, until the approval of a permanent constitution.
Unwavering Support for Syria
Saudi Arabia has stressed its support for Syria’s security, stability and unity. During an official visit to Damascus last week, the Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, met with Al-Sharaa, highlighting the Kingdom’s efforts to lift sanctions imposed on Syria.
“We will continue to work with our brothers in Syria until we reach a final lifting of the sanctions imposed on their country,” Prince Faisal said. He also added that Saudi Arabia is participating in “active dialogue with all relevant countries, whether the US or the European Union (EU),” to advance sanctions relief.
