Saudi Arabia Warns against Foreign Meddling in Sudan at Cairo Meeting

Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Waleed Al-Khuraiji, took part in a meeting in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, to discuss peace efforts in Sudan, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

In his speech at the 5th meeting of the Consultative Mechanism to Enhance Coordination of Peace Efforts in Sudan, Al-Khuraiji reiterated Saudi Arabia’s priorities for Sudan.

These include ensuring the country’s stability, achieving a ceasefire, and safeguarding state institutions from collapse, while preserving the country’s unity, territorial integrity, and national resources.

Moreover, he stressed that the viable solution for the crisis is a Sudanese-Sudanese political solution based on respecting Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity and supporting the state institutions.

Al-Khuraiji also highlighted the Kingdom’s persistent efforts to reconcile viewpoints and achieve a ceasefire, in a bid to resolve the deepening humanitarian crisis and alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.

Furthermore, the Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister underscored the Kingdom’s commitment to resuming political dialogue in light of the Jeddah Declaration of Commitment to Protect the Civilians of Sudan, and the subsequent Agreement on a Short-Term Ceasefire, signed in May 2023 between the warring parties.

Foreign Meddling

Al-Khuraiji warned that the implications of the ongoing war in Sudan threaten stability in the Middle East. He also voiced categorical rejection of the Tasis Alliance move to form a parallel government in Sudan, as this move impedes peace efforts, threatens Sudan’s unity and sovereignty, and jeopardizes the security of the Red Sea and the region.

He noted that the establishment of parallel entities outside the framework of legitimate institutions is deeply concerning, as it disrupts political efforts aimed at reaching a solution.

Importantly, the Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister underscored the urgency of preventing foreign interference and halting the flow of illegal weapons and foreign fighters into Sudan in order to achieve a ceasefire and facilitate humanitarian efforts by opening safe corridors.

In this context, he reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s support for the Sudanese government’s decision to open the Adre border crossing for aid delivery.
