Saudi Arabia has urgently called for global action to address drought issues and promote land restoration before the upcoming COP16. The Kingdom, preparing to lead the UNCCD, is urging nations to commit to drought resilience efforts strongly. Saudi Arabia emphasizes the importance of sustainable land use practices as it takes on this critical leadership role. The 16th UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) session is set to begin on December 2 in Riyadh. Experts estimate that more than 71,000 square kilometers will face degradation worldwide ahead of the conference.
Saudi Vision for Land Restoration Targets
Deputy Environment Minister Dr. Osama Faqeeha emphasized that COP16 will serve as a critical moment for addressing land degradation globally. He stated, “COP16 in Riyadh is a crucial moment to meet the UNCCD target of restoring 1.5 billion hectares of land by 2030. As hosts, we urge all parties to strengthen land restoration targets, improve drought resilience, and advance land tenure rights.”

Growing Support for Land Neutrality Goals
Since 2015, countries have been adopting Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) targets as part of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Currently, over 130 countries have joined the LDN Target Setting Program, with more than 100 nations defining specific targets. Saudi Arabia aims to encourage more countries to sign up for LDN targets and boost their implementation rates.
Economic Stakes and Restoration Opportunities
UNCCD estimates that over $44 trillion, representing more than half of the world’s GDP, depends on natural capital. Studies show that each dollar invested in restoration could yield up to $30 in returns, presenting a significant opportunity for the trillion-dollar restoration economy. With the global economy highly reliant on environmental resources, countries face significant financial incentives to adopt sustainable practices.
COP16’s Green Zone to Foster Collaboration
The upcoming conference will feature a first-of-its-kind Green Zone, a space for businesses, scientists, NGOs, and financial institutions to collaborate on sustainable solutions. Seven thematic days will provide structured discussions on topics including land restoration, governance, agri-food systems, resilience, finance, science, technology, and innovation.
Saudi Arabia’s call highlights the urgent need for collaborative, impactful efforts on land degradation. The upcoming conference in Riyadh offers a unique platform for global stakeholders to advance sustainable land management practices and address the critical challenges posed by drought and land degradation worldwide.
