Saudi Arabia Urges Muslims to Spot Ramadan Crescent Moon on Friday

Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court has urged Muslims worldwide to sight the crescent moon signaling the arrival of Ramadan on Friday, 28 February, 2025, 29 Shaaban, 1446 in the Islamic Hijri calendar.

The Supreme Court emphasized in an official statement that anyone who captures sight of the moon, either with the naked eye or through binoculars, should inform their nearest court. It also encourages individuals to contact nearby centers to facilitate reaching the nearest court. The authority’s statement underscores the importance of community involvement in lunar observations.

Should the crescent moon appear on Friday evening, after the Maghrib (sunset) prayer, Ramadan will commence on March 1. However, if the crescent goes unseen, Muslims will observe the holy month’s beginning on March 2. This annual event holds significant spiritual meaning for Muslim communities globally.

Ramadan marks the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is revered as the holiest period for Muslims. During Ramadan, believers fast from dawn until sunset, abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and other physical needs. This practice enhances spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and connection with the less fortunate.

Iftar and Suhoor Meals

Fasting concludes each day with Iftar, the meal enjoyed at sunset. Conversely, the day begins with Suhoor, a pre-dawn meal before fasting starts. These meals serve essential roles in maintaining both physical health and community bonding during this sacred month.

As Ramadan approaches, Saudi Arabia encourages all Muslims to partake actively in the moon sighting process. This involvement fosters unity and enriches the collective experience of welcoming a month filled with prayer, devotion, and charity.

Saudi Arabia’s authorities are enhancing mosque services and organizing charitable initiatives nationwide. The Kingdom anticipates increased Umrah pilgrims, with health officials urging balanced nutrition and hydration during fasting. Historically, Saudi moon-sighting combines tradition with modern astronomical data for accuracy.
