On Tuesday, gunmen opened fire at a group of tourists at a resort in the Himalayan region of Kashmir, killing at least 26 people, most of them tourists, reported the Associated Press (AP). In response, the Indian security forces launched a massive manhunt for the perpetrators of what they described as a “terror attack.”
India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, cut short his two-day visit to Saudi Arabia and returned to New Delhi on Wednesday morning.
Upon his arrival, he held an emergency meeting with his national security adviser, the foreign minister and other senior officials at the airport to address the situation. He will also hold a special security cabinet meeting later on Wednesday.
The deadly attack sparked reactions worldwide. The US President, Donald Trump; the Russian President, Vladimir Putin; and the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, were among the leaders who condemned the attack and expressed support to the Indian people. Moreover, the EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, and UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with India.
