Saudi Arabia launched the “Riyadh AI Declaration” at the opening of the 19th Internet Governance Forum (Riyadh 2024), hosted by the capital city Riyadh and organized by the United Nations. The forum aims to enhance international digital cooperation among governments, the private sector, non-profit organizations, entrepreneurs, and innovators worldwide.
The Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Eng. Abdullah bin Amer Al-Swaha, emphasized that the declaration was made possible with the support and empowerment of Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, may God protect him. The declaration focuses on the comprehensive, innovative, and impactful dimensions of artificial intelligence (AI), leveraging AI technologies to enable digital access, enhance digital knowledge, and address global challenges, while unlocking global economic value.
He affirmed that the “Riyadh Declaration” strengthens digital inclusion through artificial intelligence by increasing digital accessibility, enhancing digital literacy, and emphasizing the role of AI in sustainable development through promoting environmental protection, improving public health, and advancing economic inclusion. Additionally, it aims to leverage AI in responsible innovation by reshaping business innovation, market discovery, and boosting productivity.
He pointed out that, under the guidance and care of the Crown Prince, the Kingdom has adopted a proactive approach in the field of artificial intelligence. He emphasized that the Kingdom’s vision is clear and grounded in its commitment to leading global transformation in this domain.
Regarding the principles for activating the declaration, he also explained that the Kingdom is paving the way toward ethical and inclusive AI by addressing disparities in access to algorithms, data, and computing resources. It ensures that no one is left behind, guarantees the fairness of algorithms, minimizes errors that could negatively impact individuals or nations, promotes inclusivity in the design and use of technology, and ensures the safe and responsible use of data for the benefit of all.
