Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Municipalities and Housing plans to ban the establishment of zoos inside neighborhoods and near industrial zone.
Zoos should be established only within sites dedicated for recreational, environmental or commercial use, as well as within nature reserves.
According to Saudi Gazette, the Ministry has published these rules through the Istithlaa platform in order to collect feedback from people before the approval.
Crucially, the decision aims to facilitate investment in zoos and address visual distortion across the Kingdom.
The draft rules include several requirements, as follows:
- It is a demand to provide a road linking the designated area for the park with one of the expressways leading into and out of the city.
- The site should be connected to the main or regional roads that link the city’s public transport network and to the urban communities within its scope.
- The owners should keep the external stairs and car entrances within the property ownership boundaries.
- They also should select the park’s location outside the boundaries of flood passages, water pools and artesian wells.
- There should be more than one parking lot inside the park, with yards linked to the park’s entrances and exits and its internal road network.
- The location of the zoo should be far from industrial areas and any area that may cause pollutants.
- The site should be surrounded by a green buffer zone to provide privacy and security.
- Moreover, the licensee should abide by the requirements and instructions of the National Center for Waste Management and the competent authority.
