Saudi Arabia Boosts Urban Heritage Register with over 3,000 New Sites

The Saudi Heritage Commission has registered 3,202 new sites in the National Urban Heritage Register, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

This move brings the total number of registered sites to 28,202, demonstrating the richness of Saudi Arabia’s heritage and underscoring the Commission’s commitment to documenting and preserving the Kingdom’s heritage sites.

The newly-registered sites include 16 sites in Riyadh; 8 sites in Makkah; 1 site in Qassim; 2 sites in the Eastern Province; 2 sites in Hail; 1 site in Najran; 2 sites in Baha; and 3,170 sites in Aseer.

The registration of these sites was based on the Antiquities, Museums, and Urban Heritage Law and a decision of the Heritage Commission’s Board of Directors authorizing the Commission’s CEO to register archeological and heritage sites to preserve their historical and cultural value.

Moreover, the registration falls within the Heritage Commission‘s efforts to expand the database of registered sites to preserve and develop them, emphasizing its commitment to managing these sites with efficiency.

Additionally, the Commission aims to ensure the transmission of Saudi Arabia’s rich heritage to future generations. It also aims to strengthen the national identity and highlight the significance of the cultural heritage in society.

In the light of this, the Heritage Commission urged citizens to report unregistered heritage sites through the Balagh platform, its official social media accounts, and its branches spread across all the Kingdom’s regions.
