Russia to Deploy ‘World’s Most Powerful’ Sarmat Nuclear Missile by Year-End

Russia will deploy its new Sarmat strategic nuclear missile by the end of this year, President Vladimir Putin announced on Tuesday, describing the weapon as “the most powerful in the world.”

The planned deployment follows years of setbacks and technical delays, as this missile system aims to deliver nuclear warheads to targets thousands of miles away, specifically reaching the United States or Europe.

During televised comments, President Putin claimed the warhead’s yield is four times greater than any Western equivalent. Furthermore, he stated its range exceeds 35,000 km.

“It has the ability to penetrate all existing and future anti-missile defence systems,” Putin remarked.

However, Western security analysts remain skeptical, suggesting that Putin often makes exaggerated claims regarding Russia’s new generation of nuclear weapons. These weapons form part of a modernization program he first introduced in 2018.

Strategic Impact and Testing History

The Sarmat program has faced significant hurdles. For instance, Western experts noted that a test in September 2024 left a deep crater at the launch silo. Despite these past failures, state television showed Sergei Karakayev, commander of Russia’s strategic missile forces, reporting a successful test-launch on Tuesday.

Karakayev emphasized the strategic importance of the new system. “The deployment of launchers equipped with the Sarmat missile system will significantly enhance the combat capabilities of the ground-based strategic nuclear forces,” he said. He added that the system guarantees the “destruction of targets and solving strategic deterrence problems.”

Since the conflict in Ukraine began in 2022, Putin has frequently highlighted Russia’s nuclear arsenal. Western leaders view these statements as clear attempts to deter international intervention in the war.
