Russia ‘Condemns, Regrets’ US Strikes on Iran

Russia has deeply condemned and regretted US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan, according to Reuters.

Kremlin’s Condemnation of US Strikes

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that U.S. actions had increased the number of participants in the conflict and further fueled the tensions.

Peskov also stated that it was not yet clear to which extent the nuclear facilities have been damaged and whether there was a radiation hazard.

In January, Russia signed a strategic partnership treaty with Iran. However, the deal did not include a mutual defense clause.

Moscow had previously warned that any military intervention by the US could destabilize the entire region and plunge it into the “abyss”.

Kremlin also revealed that US President Donald Trump had not informed Russian President Vladimir Putin in detail about his planned strikes on Iran in advanced. However, they had discussed the possibility of US military intervention in general.

Urgent Talks

On Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was set to head to Russia for urgent talks with Putin after the US strikes.

Araghchi had announced that he would meet Putin and have “serious consultations” in Moscow.

“We always consult with each other and coordinate our positions,” Araghchi said.

US Strikes on Iran

Araghchi condemned US attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities and labeled it as “a violation of humanitarian law.”

“The United States showed that they have no respect to United Nations Charter. They have no respect to international law. They crossed a very big red line by attacking nuclear facilities,” he added.

Araghchi added that Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu “dragged Trump into war with Iran.”

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that the US cannot escape the consequences of its airstrikes against Iran.

IRGC also said that Iran would not fear Israel or the US, calling them “criminal gangs ruling the White House and Tel Aviv”.

Israel-Iran War

On June 13, Israel launched a wave of airstrikes on Iran under the name of Operation Rising Lion. The military campaign targeted Iran’s nuclear facilities and killed top military commanders and nuclear scientists.

As a response, Iran launched a retaliatory wave of missiles against Israel and targeted Tel Aviv. Israel also killed three more Iranian nuclear scientists, bringing the total number of scientists slain to nine, Gulf News reported.

Currently, both countries are trading missiles and attacks amid intensifying efforts to halt the conflict.
