Riyadh Art, one of the largest public art initiatives globally, has unveiled four monumental artworks with the launch of the Riyadh Metro, turning its stations into cultural landmarks, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
At the King Abdullah Financial District Metro Station, designed by the renowned Zaha Hadid Architects, Alexander Calder’s vibrant sculpture, Janey Waney, takes center stage. Known for his pioneering work in kinetic art, Calder’s creation offers visitors a dynamic and engaging experience.
Red Outside Blue Inside
Nearby, Robert Indiana’s iconic LOVE (Red Outside Blue Inside) adds a splash of color and universal themes of connection and hope, captivating commuters with its striking interplay of hues.
Moreover, these artworks together redefine the daily commute as an immersive celebration of art, architecture, and creativity.
At the Qasr Al-Hokm Downtown Metro Station, designed by Snohetta, Ugo Rondinone’s golden centerpiece, The Sun, symbolizes energy and renewal. Complementing this, Zaman Jassim’s When the Moon is Full offers a reflective nod to Riyadh’s cultural heritage with its poetic and contemplative design.
“These permanent artworks embody our vision to transform Riyadh into an open-air gallery that enriches lives and fosters deeper connections between people and art,” said Khalid Al-Hazani, executive director of Riyadh Art. “By collaborating with some of the most innovative minds of our time, we’re not just incorporating art into public spaces — we’re establishing cultural landmarks that will inspire generations,” he added.
Riyadh Art champions cultural innovation and supports Saudi Arabia’s goals of economic diversification. By positioning Riyadh as a global hub for contemporary art and culture, the initiative is fostering a vibrant community identity.
