RECOFI Elects Saudi Arabia as Chairman of Commission

The Regional Commission for Fisheries (RECOFI), part of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), has elected Saudi Arabia as its head for the third consecutive time.

This took place during the 12th session hosted by the Kingdom with the participation of 10 countries, from November 27 to 29, in Jeddah.

Recognition by Ministry of Environment, Water, Agriculture

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture expressed appreciation for Saudi Arabia’s election as Chairman of the Commission.
This reflects the confidence that Member States have given due to Saudi Arabia’s considerable efforts.
The Kingdom seeks to conserve natural resources and develop the fisheries sector.

Objectives of RECOFI

The Ministry stated that RECOFI’s goals include promoting the growth, preservation, and smart management of marine resources. It also aims to develop regional aquaculture, protect marine life, and regularly assess the fishing industry’s economic and social sides.

Additionally, it suggests ways to advance the industry and supports related scientific research and activities.

Background of RECOFI

RECOFI was established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1999. Its first session for members was held in Muscat in 2001.

RECOFI’s scope covers the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. It included the six Gulf states (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain), as well as Iraq and Iran.
