Saudi Arabia witnesses a significant rise in demand for plastic and paper items essential for food gatherings during Ramadan. The holy month, which began this year on March 1, is renowned for family gatherings and lavish meals following the daily fast. Restaurants and families extensively use items like cups, plates, and spoons during this holy month. Consequently, sales of these items increase in the lead-up to and during Ramadan.
This upsurge leads some shop owners to raise prices, capitalizing on the high demand. Since the last week of Shaaban, the month before Ramadan, paper cup prices rise by SR4. Furthermore, according to the Saudi newspaper Al Watan, prices of plastic utensils, especially plates, vary by size. However, they generally double, with large plates now costing SR10 each.
Vendors Report Increased Sales and Prices
Mohammed Al Harabi, a paper products vendor, reports a significant demand increase for his items since Ramadan begins. He explains that these items gain immense popularity at family gatherings during Ramadan, driving price hikes. “Women particularly prefer them during this holy month,” he adds.
Additionally, Al Harabi notes rising demand for various paper napkins, including table and scented ones. He also mentions higher sales of aluminum foil rolls and food packaging materials that preserve heat.
He further highlights the booming restaurant and banquet sector, driven by demand for ready-made meals and group Iftars in Ramadan. “Restaurants and bakeries require large quantities of paper materials, boosting sales,” he said.
Chef Maha Taher offers a consumer perspective, stating that many families prefer paper products to simplify meal preparation during Ramadan, especially working women with tight schedules.
