Pakistan is actively pursuing diplomatic efforts to reduce escalating tensions in the region, according to Defense Minister Khawaja Asif. Speaking in the National Assembly on Friday, Asif emphasized Islamabad’s daily engagement with key regional players, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, China, Iran and Qatar. These efforts aim to address growing concerns over recent drone activity and cross-border hostilities.
Khawaja Asif highlighted the alarming rise in drone activity, allegedly initiated by India, during his address to lawmakers. He clarified that the drones were primarily used for reconnaissance rather than immediate strikes. “The recent drone attacks by India were intended for reconnaissance purposes rather than offensive action,” Asif stated.
He explained that Pakistani forces allowed Indian drones to approach a “safe limit” before neutralizing them. This strategy aimed to avoid exposing sensitive locations while maintaining national security.
Information Minister Atta Tarar revealed that Pakistan intercepted 29 drones between Wednesday and Thursday evening. Additionally, 48 more drones were taken down overnight into Friday. “The number of drones intercepted reflects the scale and intent behind these intrusions,” Tarar said during a press briefing.
India-Pakistan Tensions Escalate
India, however, accused Pakistan of sending 300-400 drones across 36 locations from Leh to Sir Creek on Thursday night. According to Indian officials, these drones targeted military installations but were successfully shot down.
Tensions between the two nations have intensified since India launched Operation Sindoor on Wednesday. This operation was a response to the Pahalgam attack on 22 April, which India claims had cross-border linkages. Pakistan’s subsequent attempt to target 15 Indian cities further strained relations.
Saudi Arabia Champions Diplomatic Efforts
Amid rising tensions, Pakistan has ramped up diplomatic outreach to regional allies. Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir arrived in Islamabad on Friday after an unannounced visit to New Delhi. During his visit, Al-Jubeir met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to state-run Radio Pakistan, Al-Jubeir is also expected to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir. His visit underscores Saudi Arabia’s role in mediating regional conflicts.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi visited New Delhi earlier this week for a scheduled meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The meeting focused on bilateral cooperation and regional stability.

Khawaja Asif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to de-escalating tensions through diplomatic channels. He stressed the importance of collaboration with regional partners, including Iran, Saudi Arabia, and China, to ensure peace and stability.
