OIC Makes Strong Call for End of Human Rights “Double Standards”
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has made a strong call for an end to what it terms as ‘double standards’ in the global approach to human rights. This call by the OIC, marks a significant moment in the dialogue surrounding international human rights practices in the ongoing Gaza War.
The Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation(IPHRC) has condemned “double standards in applying human rights”.
IPHRC voiced its concerns, particularly in Human Rights Day 2023 on Dec. 10, the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Addressing Global Human Rights Disparities
Accordingly, the OIC’s statement addresses a critical issue that has long been a point of contention in international relations: the unequal application of human rights standards across different nations. The organization also highlights the urgent need for a more balanced, and fair implementation of these standards.
Moreover, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, established in 1969, has increasingly become a pivotal player in international diplomacy, especially regarding issues that affect the Muslim world.
By taking a firm stance on human rights, the OIC is advocating for its member states. It is also for the broader principle of universal human rights. This move by the OIC is a step towards more inclusive global governance.
Challenges and Implications
Additionally, while the call by the OIC is commendable, it also brings to light the challenges inherent in harmonizing human rights practices globally. Different legal, and political contexts make the implementation of a uniform standard complex. The OIC’s stance is likely to spark discussions on the need for universal human rights norms.
The Way Forward
Furthermore, the OIC’s call for an end to human rights ‘double standards’ is a significant move in the direction of a more just world order. It emphasizes the importance of dialogue, and understanding in the global human rights discourse.
