A shooter killed nine people and wounded 27 others at a secondary school and nearby residence in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada, before taking their own life Tuesday afternoon. Police discovered six victims inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, one person died en route to hospital, and two additional bodies appeared at a connected residence. Officers also found the suspected shooter deceased with an apparent self-inflicted injury inside the school building.
Nation Reacts to Unthinkable Violence
Prime Minister Mark Carney said he felt “devastated” by these “horrific acts of violence” and immediately canceled his trip to the Munich Security Conference. British Columbia Premier David Eby called the violence “unimaginable” while RCMP commander Ken Floyd described the incident as “a rapidly evolving and dynamic situation.” The municipality released a heartbreaking statement: “There are no words sufficient for the heartbreak our community is experiencing tonight.”
Student Darian Quist recalled staying in lockdown for over two hours during mechanics class before police escorted everyone out with hands raised. His mother Shelley embraced him tightly afterward, telling reporters, “He’s not going to be out of my sight for a while now.” Authorities continue searching additional properties for possible connections to this devastating event.
A Community in Mourning
Mass shootings remain extremely rare across Canada, making this tragedy especially shocking for the quiet town of 2,400 residents nestled deep in the Rocky Mountain foothills. Investigators have not yet released identities or motives as the community begins grieving its profound loss together. The municipality confirmed it stands “devastated by the loss of life and the profound impact this tragedy has had on families, students, staff, and our entire town.” As shock gives way to sorrow, Tumbler Ridge faces a long road toward healing after this senseless violence shattered its peace.
