Netanyahu Expands Lebanon Buffer Zone, Warns of Regional Escalation

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the military on Sunday to further expand the existing security buffer zone in southern Lebanon, vowing to fundamentally change the security situation there during ongoing regional tensions. “I have just instructed to further expand the existing security buffer zone. We resolve to fundamentally change the situation in the north,” Netanyahu said in a video statement from the Northern Command.

The decision aims to strengthen Israel’s security posture along the northern frontier amid cross-border hostilities, which have raised fears of a broader regional escalation throughout the Middle East. “We have created a genuine security zone preventing any infiltration toward the Galilee and the northern border,” Netanyahu said. “We are expanding this zone to push the threat from anti-tank missiles further away and to establish a broader buffer zone.”

Iran Connection Remains Central

Netanyahu said that dismantling Hezbollah remains central to Israel’s objectives in Lebanon currently, connecting this mission to the broader confrontation with Iran and its regional proxies. “This links to the broader confrontation with Iran,” he said during his address. “We resolve to profoundly transform the situation in Lebanon,” he added firmly.

Lebanon entered the Middle East war when Iran-backed Hezbollah began firing rockets into Israel on 2 March, avenging the killing of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during hostilities. Israeli forces continue pressing ahead with their campaign against Hezbollah throughout southern Lebanon territory, with military operations focusing on pushing militant capabilities away from the northern border communities.

International observers watch closely as the buffer zone expansion unfolds across the contested border region. Diplomatic efforts continue seeking de-escalation while military operations proceed on the ground daily. The expanding security zone represents Israel’s commitment to protecting northern citizens from ongoing threats. Regional stability remains uncertain as multiple actors pursue competing strategic objectives simultaneously.
