NEOM Investment Fund Invests in Supersonic Aviation
The NEOM Investment Fund (NIF), an instrumental part of Saudi Arabia’s ambitious $500 billion urban area megaproject NEOM, has made a strategic move by investing in Boom Supersonic.
This American company is at the forefront of reviving supersonic passenger aviation.
This collaboration does not only involve financial investment but also aims to enhance the accessibility of the Gulf region through supersonic flight, leveraging Boom’s XB-1 proof-of-concept aircraft.
Boom Supersonic: A Visionary in Aviation
Boom Supersonic, a Denver-based company, is developing the world’s fastest airliner. Their recent milestones in the Overture airliner, Symphony engine, and XB-1 supersonic demonstrator programs are remarkable.
The total funding exceeding $700 million, including NIF’s significant contribution, Boom Supersonic is on a fast track to revolutionize air travel.
Their goal is to connect the world faster, making long-distance travel more time-efficient.
Key Milestones, Developments
- XB-1’s Historic First Flight: Boom has achieved significant progress towards the XB-1’s first flight, slated for later this year. They have successfully completed several integrated tests, including ground vibration, fuel system, and engine operability testing, under the scrutiny of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
- Symphony Engine’s Progress: The Symphony, a propulsion system purpose-built for sustainable supersonic flight, has accomplished its Conceptual Design Review (CoDR).
- Overture Superfactory Construction: Progress on the Overture Superfactory in North Carolina is ahead of schedule, with structural completion expected by the second quarter of 2024.
Specifications, Expectations
The Boom Overture is poised to be a game-changer in aviation. It’s a proposed Mach 1.7 airliner, accommodating 64–80 passengers, and boasting a range of 4,250 nmi.
Scheduled for introduction in 2029, the Overture represents a significant leap from traditional passenger jets.
Its design and composite material construction echo the legendary Concorde, yet with modern, eco-friendly turbofans.
Transforming Global Air Travel
Boom’s vision encompasses 500 viable routes. For instance, travel time between New York/Newark and London would be reduced to just 3.5 hours.
This remarkable speed and capacity are expected to create a market for 1,000 supersonic airliners by 2035. Boom’s competitive pricing strategy sets $5,000 for a New York-to-London round-trip, far less than Concorde’s adjusted $20,000 fare.
Additionally, they are targeting operational costs lower than traditional wide-body subsonic aircraft.
Airline Partnerships
Boom’s ambitions are supported by major airlines. United Airlines has agreed to purchase 15 Overture aircraft, with an option for 35 more, aiming to commence passenger flights by 2029.
Similarly, American Airlines announced an agreement to purchase 20 aircraft.
The an additional 40 options, signifying the industry’s confidence in Boom’s vision.
NEOM’s Strategic Vision
The investment by NIF is a testament to Saudi Arabia’s commitment to pioneering in global transport and technological innovation.
NEOM’s CEO, Majid Mufti, emphasized the alignment of this investment with NEOM’s broader development objectives .
The NEOM Investment Fund’s venture into supersonic aviation through its investment in Boom Supersonic is a bold step towards revolutionizing global air travel.
It aligns with Saudi Arabia’s vision of transforming NEOM into a hub of innovation and economic growth.
The advancements by Boom Supersonic in developing the Overture airliner promise to significantly reduce travel times, making the world more connected and accessible.
This strategic partnership symbolizes a future where supersonic travel is not just a possibility but a reality.
