The renowned neurologist, Lord John Walton, served as a mentor and a source of inspiration for Al-Rodhan. At Mayo Clinic, Al-Rodhan made notable progress, where he became Chief Resident in Neurosurgery Department. In 1988, he got a PH.D. for his work on the Characterization of Opioid and Neurotensin Receptor Subtypes in the Brain with Respect to Antinociception.

Assuming Prestigious Positions

The successful journey went on with more accomplishments in neuroscience. In 1993, Professor Al-Rodhan joined the department of neurosurgery at the Yale University School of Medicine as a fellow in epilepsy surgery and molecular neuroscience.

In 1994, Al-Rodhan got a fellowship at the department of neurosurgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital at Harvard Medical School. There, he focused on the study of neuropeptides, molecular genetics, and neuronal regeneration. In 1995, he was appointed to the faculty of the Harvard Medical School owing to his remarkable success.

Professor Al-Rodhan cooperated with Nobel Prize winner, James E. Muller, to found the neurotechnology program at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He also worked with Robert Martuza to establish the Laboratories for Cellular Neurosurgery and Neurosurgical Technology at the department of neurosurgery of Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School.

Navigating Unexplored Areas

Al-Rodhan took his passion for neuroscience to a higher level, expanding his study field to include the complex interplay between neuroscience and international relations. Since 2002, his work has focused on exploring the application of neuroscience, and the neuro-behavioral consequences of the neurochemical and cellular mechanisms that affect emotions, in the analysis of contemporary geopolitical trends.

Being a pioneer in this field, Al-Rodhan has joined the Geneva Center for Security Policy in Geneva as a Senior Fellow and Head of the Geopolitics and Global Futures Program in 2006.

Three years later, he became a senior member of St. Antony’s College at Oxford University. His work included analyzing the critical turning points in the Arab-Islamic World and their geopolitical relevance to the current and future trends. In 2014, he became an Honorary Fellow of St. Antony’s College.

Al-Rodhan also became a Senior Research Fellow of the Institute of Philosophy, School of Advanced Study at the University of London in 2020. During the same year, he became Member of the Global Future Council on Frontier Risks at the World Economic Forum. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).

Introducing New Theories

Throughout his career, Professor Nayef Al-Rodhan wrote 25 books and more than 300 articles, covering a wide range of topics. In 2007, he introduced the Symbiotic Realism Theory that explores international relations from a new perspective.

In the Symbiotic Realism: A Theory of International Relations in An Instant and An Interdependent World, Al-Rodhan aims to provide a framework for understanding the nature of relations resulting from four intertwining aspects of the global system: the neurobiological substrates of human nature; global anarchy; instant connectivity; and interdependence.

Furthermore, Al-Rodhan introduced another important theory in his book Emotional Amoral Egoism: A Neurophilosophical Theory of Human Nature and its Universal Security Implications, published in 2008. In this book, he offers a fresh look into human behavior, arguing that it is guided by emotional self-interest and that the human mind is a predisposed tabula rasa.

Popular Books

In 2012, Al-Rodhan published one of his most recognized books The Role of the Arab-Islamic World in the Rise of the West: Implications for Contemporary Trans-Cultural Relations. The book highlights the cultural transmission of ideas and institutions from the Arab-Islamic World to the West in several key areas, such as science, philosophy, humanism, law, finance, and commerce. The book also challenges the common Eurocentric narratives on the rise of modern Europe.
