Meet Hatem Zagloul … The Egyptian Scientist Who Invented Wifi Technology
Dr. Hatem Zagloul is an Egyptian-Canadian citizen who was born in Giza Governorate on February 7, 1957.
He is known around the world for a series of studies and ideas that led to the development of Wi-Fi technology, which enables high-speed wireless communication between electronic devices.
Academic Background
Hatem Zagloul studied electronic engineering at Cairo University in Giza and obtained a bachelor’s degree in 1979.
At Ain Shams University, he studied applied sports. From 1981 to 1983, he worked as an engineer for the international oil exploration corporation Schlumberger, specializing in the measurement of oil well characteristics.
Between 1984 to 1989, he served as an assistant professor at the University of Calgary (Alberta’s largest city).
In 1985, he graduated from the same university with a master’s degree in physics. Between 1988 and 1990, he taught statistics at Atapaxa University.
He worked as a researcher for the Canadian telecom company, Telus, from 1989 to 1993.
Global Appreciation
Dr. Zagloul has received numerous international prizes and diplomas, including the Farder Milner Casgrain Pinnacle Award for entrepreneurship and the Calgary Award for Distinguished Immigrants (Business Field) in 1998.
In July 1999, he was named a technical distinguished Canadian by Canadian Computer Wholesaler.
In 1997 and 1998, he was a finalist for the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Calgary Magazine named him “Calgarian of the Year” for 2000.
His social activity in Canada
Dr. Hatem co-founded the Calgary Muslim Community Foundation (MCFC), and as a result, the first Islamic school was built in Calgary in 2000.
He also co-founded a monthly magazine for Muslims in Calgary, served as president of the Calgary Muslim Association in 1993, and as president of the Islamic Council of Calgary in 2003.
WiLAN
Dr. Hatem Zagloul established WiLAN in cooperation with Dr. Michel Fattoush in 1992 in Canada to turn these inventions into commercial products.
The company was put on the stock exchange in 1999, and won many international awards.
Dr. Zagloul is currently the Chairman and CEO of IPL Media Inc. Technology, which specializes in providing web development solutions, in addition to its activity in developing and marketing mobile games.
