KSA to Host “COP 16” Next December
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) will host the Riyadh Conference “COP 16” early next December. It will work to enhance cooperation between the 197 countries that have signed the (UN) Convention to Combat Desertification.

During the discussion session hosted by the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, the attendants made the statement. Undersecretary of the Ministry for Environment, Dr. Osama Fakiha, was invited to attend the conference.
KSA Contributions
According to the Ministry, 99 percent of food comes from land. While vegetation contributes to collecting about 75 percent of freshwater globally.
Regarding the data released by the (UN) Convention to Combat Desertification, up to 40 percent of the world’s land is degraded. As a result, it is affecting half of humanity. So, the target of restoring 1.5 billion hectares of degraded land by 2030 will be an urgent necessity.
During the session “Road to Riyadh” session, Fakiha said that the Kingdom has plans and strategies to preserve the environment. In addition to focusing on local issues, international initiatives like the Global Initiative to Reduce Land Degradation and the Green Middle East Initiative were launched.
These efforts also aim to accomplish environmental goals at the international level. Furthermore, Fakiha said, the Kingdom’s intentions to host this conference are contingent upon ongoing coordination and planning with global partners.
Importance Of Cooperation
Andrea Murillo, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, emphasized the importance of cooperation in preserving the environment.
She also pointed out the Kingdom’s environmental protection efforts intriguing, by attempting to reclaim thirty percent of the land, which helps to achieve food and water security. She added that the kingdom is providing excellent opportunities to achieve compatibility with the environmental agenda.
