Transport companies participating in the Hajj and Umrah Exhibition are showcasing the latest smart transportation technologies including self-driving bus. They exert efforts to harness all technical capabilities for passengers’ comfort and their potential use in the upcoming Hajj season.
“Akhbaar 24” met with Ghassan from Saptco Company for Public Transport on the sidelines of the exhibition. He presented a smart, self-driving bus that accommodates 15 passengers and reaches a speed of 25 km/h.
Ghassan pointed out that the smart bus first came out in 2019 at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and later in NEOM. The experience has proven successful, with a 0% accident rate announced over two years of usage.
He stated that the bus is connected to a smart application that allows passengers to request the bus from their location, choose their desired destination, and the smart system provides them with the expected arrival time.
Passengers can also wait for the bus at one of the stations within KAUST or NEOM and then board it.
The bus will be used more extensively in the future on the streets and roads of the Kingdom. It has the ability to drive on roads with other vehicles because it has intelligent sensors to prevent collisions.
