King Cup Bench Boosted: SAFF Expands Substitutes for Saudi Teams

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) has announced a significant change for the upcoming 2024-2025 King Cup. Teams will now be allowed to include up to 12 substitutes, with a minimum of 5 players on the bench, an increase from the previous limit of nine players. This adjustment aims to give coaches more tactical flexibility during matches.

Rule Aligned with Asian Competitions

The decision aligns with the regulations of major Asian tournaments. According to SAFF, it also encourages the inclusion of younger players by providing more opportunities for them to feature in high-profile matches. The change was officially updated in Article 20, Paragraph 1, of the tournament’s regulations. Additionally, the rule mandates a minimum of five substitutes on the bench for each match.

First Round Matchups

The first round of the King Cup is set to take place between September 22 and 25. During this phase, top Saudi teams will face favorable opponents. Defending champions Al Hilal will clash with Al Bukayriyah, while Al Ahli meets Al Jandal. Al Ittihad will take on Al Ain, and Al Nassr will battle Al Hazem. Fans can expect thrilling encounters in this knockout competition.

With the substitute limit expanded, coaches have more options for squad rotation. It also provides an opportunity for youth players to participate in the tournament. This decision not only reflects global trends but also strengthens the development of local talent in Saudi Arabia.
