Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said he has recently met Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, state media reported on Thursday, according to Reuters.
This meeting marked the first public account since the new Supreme Leader has remained out of sight after being reported injured at the beginning of the US–Israeli war on Iran.
Pezeshkian was reported as saying the meeting took place in a “humble and deeply cordial” atmosphere.
“What struck me most during this meeting was the vision and the humble and sincere approach of the supreme leader of the Islamic revolution,” Pezeshkian said in a video broadcast by state television.
Khamenei was wounded in the opening-day strikes of the Middle East war that killed his father and predecessor Ali Khamenei.
Since his appointment, the new Supreme Leader has been seen only issuing written statements, with no public appearances.
War in Iran
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, targeting its leadership and triggering a new conflict in the Middle East.
Iran has been responding with a retaliatory counterattack in Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi as a retaliatory move, while launching barrages of missiles and drones toward Israel.
The conflict has spread across the Middle East, leaving thousands dead, triggering unprecedented disruptions to energy supplies especially after the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
The adversaries remain locked in a standoff over the Strait of Hormuz, as Iran tightens its control over maritime traffic while the United States continues to enforce a blockade on Iranian ports.
