Iran Urges IAEA Chief to Avoid “Unfounded Opinions” on Nuclear Program

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, said that the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency is “fully aware of the peaceful nature” of Iran’s nuclear program and thus he should not express “unfounded opinions” on it, according to Reuters.

Baghaei’s remarks came a day after IAEA chief Rafael Grossi noted that movement had been detected around Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile. Grossi also clarified that it did “not imply” enrichment activity.

Baghaei also emphasized that Grossi’s previous statements regarding Iran’s nuclear program laid the foundation for Israel and the US to attack Iranian nuclear sites in June.

“Grossi should refrain from expressing unfounded opinions about our nuclear program… He is fully aware of the peaceful nature of it,” he said.

Iranian officials have repeatedly accused the IAEA of providing Israel with a pretext for its bombing campaign, noting that Israeli attacks began the day after the agency’s board voted to declare Tehran in breach of its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

This month, Tehran also annulled its cooperation agreement with the UN’s nuclear watchdog, (IAEA), signed in September.

This move followed statements by Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, who cautioned that his country would scrap the deal — which allowed the IAEA to resume inspections of its nuclear facilities — if European powers decided to reimpose UN sanctions.

On September 28, the E3_ Britain, France, and Germany_ reimposed sanctions on Tehran after they claimed that Iran has violated a 2015 deal that aimed at halting it from developing a nuclear weapon.

Iran has denied this accusation and said that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
