Britain Announces New Sanctions on Iran

The UK imposed sanctions on dozens of Iran-linked individuals and entities on Monday to further curb what London described as Tehran’s nuclear proliferation activities, according to Reuters.

This move follows similar steps by the United Nations and the European Union to punish Iran for violating a 2015 deal that aimed at halting it from developing a nuclear weapon.

However, Iran has repeatedly such accusation and claimed that its nuclear program is only meant for peaceful purposes.

On Sunday, the United Nations reinstated an arms embargo and other sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program.

Consequently, Britain added 71 new designations to its sanctions list on Monday, targeting senior officials involved in Iran’s nuclear program along with major financial and energy institutions.

Those targeted by the British sanctions will now face asset freezes, financial restrictions, and travel bans.

Nuclear Talks

Iran and the US held five rounds of nuclear talks before Israel targeted Iranian nuclear facilities on June 13.

However, these talks faced key stumbling blocks such as uranium enrichment on Iranian soil, a step met with utter rejection by European powers which claimed that Tehran is enriching uranium for unpeaceful purposes.

The imposition of sanctions is anticipated to have critical consequences on Tehran where the economy already struggles with crippling sanctions reimposed since 2018 after Donald Trump withdrew from the pact during his first presidential term.
