Slovenia has banned Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from traveling to the EU country over Gaza War, according to Reuters.
The Secretary of State at the Foreign Ministry, Neva Grasic, said that the decision was linked to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against Netanyahu.
“With this action Slovenia confirms its commitment to international law, the universal values of human rights and a principled and consistent foreign policy,” Grasic added.
In August, Slovenia imposed an arms embargo on Israel in response to its ongoing genocide in the Palestinian enclave.
Moreover, the government banned the entry of any imports of goods produced in Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories.
“With this decision, the government is sending a clear message to the state of Israel that Slovenia expects consistent compliance with the decisions of international courts and international humanitarian law,” she added.
Since the EU country officially recognized the Palestinian State in 2024, its government has been calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and increased aid deliveries to the enclave.
Moreover, Slovenia declared in July two far-right Israeli cabinet ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, persona non grata.
The Slovenian government has accused both ministers of making “genocidal statements” and inciting violence against Palestinians.
Slovenia’s government issued a statement saying both Ben-Gvir and Smotrich “publicly advocate the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, the forced evictions of Palestinians, and call for violence against the civilian Palestinian population”.
